I am delighted to announce I am offering a writer the opportunity to work with me as part of this year’s #Write Mentor programme. #Write Mentor gives a pre-agented writer the chance to work with a published author.

I am offering one writer the chance to work with me on their query package which will include the first three chapters of their novel, synopsis and covering letter.

At the end of the process there will be agent showcase. Agents will look at the mentee openings and potentially make requests for full manuscripts.

Ideally, you will already have a first draft of your novel. We will be working on the first chapters together, making them snappy and shiny and ready for submission, along with your synopsis and your (extremely important) query letter. Don’t worry, though, if you have not yet completed the first draft of your novel, and don’t worry if you are not a plotter and planner and don’t yet have a full outline. I am looking to work with a writer whose writing excites me, who is invested in their novel and who wants to get it right. This is more important to me than knowing you have a complete first draft or that you know exactly where you are going with your book. If an agent likes your writing and your novel opening they will remember you and be happy to look at your complete manuscript once it is ready.

For the #Write Mentor scheme, you need to be working on a Young Adult or Middle Grade novel. If you are working on an adult novel, I will soon be offering a mentoring service with The Riff Raff (more on that another time).

In in terms of genre I am looking for either Contemporary, Humour, Historical, Romance, or LGBTQ+Own Voices. I will consider another genre such as Mystery, Dystopian or Paranormal if the writing appeals to me.

In your writing sample, I want to meet your protagonist. I will be looking for a strong sense of character along with a consistent voice/style and an opening that grabs me and gets straight into the action, whatever the action may be. Please make sure your sample is edited and proof-read and that your tenses and point of view are consistent.

You will be able to apply through the #WriteMentor website. The application window is Friday 4th May – Friday 11th May. We will be working together over the summer, so from Friday 1st June to Friday 31st August. We will work around holidays etc.

I am really looking forward to reading your writing sample and to working with you. Let’s do this! 🙂
